Today marks the first dental appointment for Khai as well as Carter. For weeks prior to the appointment, Khai and I talked about the visit, what the dentist would do, the importance of brushing his teeth, and so on and so forth. I was pretty confident that he would stroll right on in there, plop on the chair and do us all proud. Wrong. When we first got there, Khai was instantly impressed by the waiting area. Small, but definitely kid friendly, it had toys and books and as our luck would have it, a train cartoon was on the big screen TV. So far so good...until they called us in. John and Carter hadn't arrived yet so we went on in. Khai climbed up on the chair and this is when things took a turn and never looked back. As the hygienist moved the seat back, Khai began to get nervous. Her telling him it was a fun ride definitely made no difference to him and at that point he made up his mind that this was ALL bad. Thankfully John and Carter arrived just in time and Carter stepped up as the brave big brother and agreed to go first. Despite him showing Khai that there was nothing to be afraid of, Khai steady said "No, I don't wanna do it", and by the time his turn was up, Khai was in full fear mode screaming "Get me outta heeeerrrre!!!". It got to the point where John had to sit in the seat with Khai over him, his legs locked around Khai's thrashing legs, his arms bolting Khai's flailing arms down, and me securing his face so the hygienist could do her job. I'm surprised he didn't clamp his mouth shut though and with it wide open from all the screaming, she was able to do the cleaning.
I am pleased to report: No Cavities.
Carter on the other hand was not so lucky and walked away with four and an appointment for filings in a few weeks. He was however, quite brave, which I am proud of. Nervous at first, but definitely brave and was there the entire while to support Khai. He even secured some extra stickers for Khai. The boys each got a gold coin to put a gumball machine and get a toy, along with a few goodies (toothbrush, floss, coloring sheets) to take home.
And whats this with the fluoride treatment?? Since when does it look like whip cream and come in 6 flavors?
I remember it being this nasty, goopey stuff they claimed tasted like bubble gum and was splatted in these mouth pieces and stuffed in your mouth with that horrible suction tube on the side. Hated it. Khai and Carter got to pick any flavor they wanted.. banana split, grape, bubblegum, peach, strawberry, and something else and it was applied with a q-tip and actually was yummy!! Between his sobs, Khai asked for strawberry .. then tasted it and at this point his crying and fear switched over as he realized Hey this isn't so bad at all.. He kept saying Mmm. Yum. Mmmm. between hiccups.
